Polish B1 speaking: everyday conversation and short tasks
The B1 oral exam checks whether you can keep a conversation going on familiar topics: work, study, plans, opinions. You may describe a picture, react to a situation, or answer follow-up questions. The adult Polish B1 state exam has five separately scored parts: listening (about 30 minutes, each recording played twice), reading (45 minutes), grammar, writing, and a 15-minute speaking exam. The pass mark is 50% in each part, not an average across papers. An answer key checks the closed reading, listening, and grammar tasks. It does not score the letter you write or the recording you make.

How to practice this skill effectively
- Answer in full sentences; one-word replies sound uncertain even if they are grammatically fine.
- Prepare flexible phrases (opinions, agreement, hesitation) so you can keep talking without panic.
- Practice paraphrasing if you forget a word — examiners reward communication, not perfection.
Common mistakes at this level
- Answering with a single word or short phrase, which sounds uncertain even when the vocabulary is fine.
- Freezing when a word is forgotten instead of paraphrasing or describing around it.
