Polish B1 listening: clear speech at a natural pace
B1 listening uses short dialogues, announcements, and monologues on everyday topics. You usually hear each recording twice — use the first pass for overall meaning and the second for details. The adult Polish B1 state exam has five separately scored parts: listening (about 30 minutes, each recording played twice), reading (45 minutes), grammar, writing, and a 15-minute speaking exam. The pass mark is 50% in each part, not an average across papers. An answer key checks the closed reading, listening, and grammar tasks. It does not score the letter you write or the recording you make.

How to practice this skill effectively
- Read the questions before the audio plays — you will know what to listen for.
- Watch for negation (nie, nigdy, mało) and near-synonyms in distractors; they are classic exam traps.
- If you miss a word, keep listening — later sentences often repeat or clarify the same information.
Common mistakes at this level
- Trying to write down every word instead of the key information, then losing track of the next sentence.
- Choosing an option because it repeats a word from the recording, rather than one that matches its actual meaning.
